Boudhanath Stupa, located in the northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu, is one of the largest and most significant Buddhist monuments in Nepal. This iconic stupa, also known as Khāsti Chaitya, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from around the world.
The stupa’s massive mandala makes it the largest spherical stupa in Nepal. Its whitewashed dome and gilded tower, adorned with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, create a striking and serene image. The structure is rich in symbolism, representing the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and ether, and the 13 levels of the spire symbolize the stages to enlightenment.
Boudhanath Stupa is surrounded by a vibrant community of Tibetan Buddhists, and the area is filled with monasteries, shops, and cafes. Pilgrims and visitors alike perform kora (circumambulation) around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and offering prayers. The atmosphere is especially captivating during the morning and evening when the stupa is bathed in the soft light of the rising or setting sun.
