Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, is an ancient religious complex perched atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley, west of Kathmandu city. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal.
The stupa, with its iconic white dome and gilded spire adorned with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha, is surrounded by a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Licchavi period. The site is rich in symbolism and is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. The name “Swayambhunath” means “self-sprung,” reflecting the legend that the stupa emerged spontaneously from a lotus flower.
Visitors can reach the stupa by climbing a long staircase or by taking a car road that winds around the hill. The area is also home to many monkeys, which are considered holy and add to the unique atmosphere of the site.
